About EuroGod
It seems that the idea, or perception, of “God” varies pretty widely
from one country and/or culture to another.
In Europe, the image or concept conjured up by the word “God” is
often a negative one, constructed on the foundation of wars (the
crusades, Northern Ireland, Shiite vs. Sunni, etc.) or calamities
(pandemic outbreaks, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, storms) or tolerance
of horrific human behavior (the Holocaust, forced starvation, ethnic
cleansing, racism of all manifestations).
Thus, when one speaks of “God” in a Western European context, the
word may be met with instant rejection (for the above reasons), or pity
(since religion and religion’s god is only for the backward or mildly
mentally incompetent) or a blank stare (”Does anyone even think that
thoughts of god are relevant?”).
So how can one dialogue of the Creator of all things in such a
context?
This blog will provide some thoughts about the intersection of God
with the dominant cultures of Western Europe. Notice “cultures” rather
than “culture”. There is no single monolithic culture in Western Europe.
It varies widely. This blog will talk about that too.
Welcome. Your reflections are invited. A respectful dialogue is the
objective. Join in the Journey. It is a Journey whose destination is a
Person, not a place, where good questions are more, or at least as,
important as good answers.
We’re off!
